March 22, 2018 ADA Reinforces ADR Awareness & Immunization Status Members of the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA’s) Professional Practice Committee highlight changes in classification and diagnosis for the 2018 “Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes.” While many factors must be considered when completing medical evaluations, the ADA reminds clinicians that an awareness of medication-related adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and patient-specific immunization history must be considered to prevent disease in those patients predisposed by diabetic medical comorbidity. Study Proposes Five Diabetes Types A new study published in February 2018 in The Lancet clusters individuals with adult-onset diabetes and describes novel subgroups and outcomes associated with this data. Although current clinical understanding of diabetes recognizes the two main categories of diabetes as type 1 or type 2 diabetes (excluding gestational diabetes categories), the new study proposed an amended classification that could facilitate a more individualized, patient-centered diagnosis and treatment plan leading to more effective outcomes. Call for Better Hypoglycemia Control While there is currently no absolute medical consensus regarding the optimal A1C goals in the treatment of diabetes, the Endocrine Society communicates a strong message of concern for the lack of focus on the risks of hypoglycemia. While some tools exist to help providers identify individuals at high risk of hypoglycemia, they are not widely used.
